Motivational Monday speaker at R.C. Hatch was Steve Anderson, Tuscaloosa’s first African American police chief. Anderson encouraged students to make positive choices, value themselves, focus on their goals and have positive attitudes. 

Mr. Anderson is a 1989 graduate of R.C. Hatch. Mr. Anderson attended the University of Alabama graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice in 1993. He began his career with the Tuscaloosa Police Department in 1994 as a patrol officer and advanced quickly holding the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain before being appointed Chief of Police by Mayor Walt Maddox in August of 2008. He led the police department for eleven years. After his retirement from the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Steven joined the University of Alabama System as Director of System Security in September of 2019 where he is currently employed.
